How Safe is Your Continuous Glucose Monitoring System with Airport Security Scanners? What You Need to Know about Dexcom and Freestyle Libre

Shoes off, jackets off, laptops out - but what about your CGM?

Between ever-changing TSA rules and lines that seem to stretch into eternity, it’s tempting to wish you could cut some corners with the whole security ordeal. But, it’s a reality we can’t avoid even with TSA PreCheck. So, what’s the deal - Can your Dexcom or Freestyle Libre make it through airport security scanners unscathed?

Can I wear my CGM through airport security?

The short answer: It depends on your CGM and the type of scanner. We outlined the breakdown of the latest recommendations from Dexcom and Freestyle Libre below:

Dexcom G6

Dexcom G6 hasn’t been tested on every security scanner or X-ray machine for safety. Dexcom recommends requesting hand-wanding or a full-body pat-down instead of going through a full-body scanner and opting for a hand inspection of extra supplies rather than running them through the luggage X-ray machine.

  • Metal Detectors: Yes
  • Hand Wands: Yes
  • Full-Body Scanners: No
  • X-Ray Machines: No

Dexcom G7

Dexcom G7 sensors can be worn while passing through metal detectors and full-body scanners, and it’s safe for extra sensors to go through luggage x-ray machines. But if you’d feel more comfortable, you can always request hand-wanding, full-body pat-down and a visual inspection of your supplies for an added peace of mind.

  • Metal Detectors: Yes
  • Hand Wands: Yes
  • Full-Body Scanners: Yes
  • X-Ray Machines: Yes

Freestyle Libre 14-Day

Freestyle Libre 14 Day sensors are safe for metal detectors and hand wands. However, full-body scanners and X-ray machines should be avoided as they may impact the sensor's performance. Request an alternative screening both, such as hand-wanding, a full-body pat down, or a visual inspection of your supplies.

  • Metal Detectors: Yes
  • Hand Wands: Yes
  • Full-Body Scanners: No
  • X-Ray Machines: No

FreeStyle Libre 2, FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus, FreeStyle Libre 3 and FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus

The latest Freestyle Libre sensors are generally safe to pass through most airport security equipment. However, full-body scanners that use millimeter radio waves, which haven’t been fully evaluated for safety. To avoid potential sensor damage or inaccurate readings, Abbott recommends requesting an alternative screening method.

  • Metal Detectors: Yes
  • Hand Wands: Yes
  • Full-Body Scanners: Yes*
  • X-Ray Machines: Yes

*Note: Full-body scanners using millimeter waves may damage the sensor or cause inaccurate readings. X-ray based scanners, however, are generally safe. Before going through a full-body scanner, ask the security officer about the type of scan you’ll be passing through to ensure it is safe for your sensor.

Airport Security Tips for CGM Users

  • Pack Extra Supplies: Always keep backup sensors, transmitters and other essentials in your carry-on. Request hand inspection for these items if they cannot safely travel through X-ray machines. Remember, most airlines allow a free additional medical carry on bag for supplies, just make sure you don’t have any other personal items in the bag.
  • Notify Security Officers: Inform TSA agents about your CGM before going through the checkpoint so they can assist with proper screening procedures.
  • Stay Calm and Advocate: If you are unsure about the screening process or feel uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to ask for an alternative method, like a pat-down or hand-wanding to protect your device.

Final Thoughts

Whether you are using Dexcom or Freestyle Libre, understanding the do’s and don’ts of airport scanners helps protect your sensor so you can focus on your travels and leave the stress of security behind you.
