Exciting news was recently announced for Freestyle Libre continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) users. Freestyle Libre 2 Plus sensor is officially authorized to work with the Tandem t:slim x2 insulin pump. Previously, Freestyle Libre did not not integrate with any automated insulin pumps, but that doesn’t appear to be the case anymore! Abbott, the manufacturer of Freestyle Libre, shared that they are working with Insulet, the manufacturer of Omnipod, to create compatible insulin pump integrations that will be released in the very near future after receiving FDA clearance as well.
The expansion of Freestyle Libre’s technology will provide more options for people with diabetes, particularly for those who may not have insurance coverage for the other CGM-integrated systems. Continue reading for more details about what to expect with the future Freestyle Libre integration.
What is an automated insulin delivery system?
AID systems help people manage daily diabetes care by automatically adjusting and administering the insulin delivered by an insulin pump based on real-time glucose data obtained from the CGM device. At present, Tandem t:slim x2 insulin pump is the only automated insulin pump that has integration capabilities with Freestyle Libre and Dexcom. Insulet, the manufacturer of Omnipod, has plans to release a compatible automated insulin delivery device with Freestyle Libre in the near future.
What insulin pumps are compatible with Freestyle Libre 2 Plus and Freestyle Libre 3?
Currently FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus and FreeStyle Libre 3 sensors available today in the U.S. are approved for people four years and older and have a wear time of up to 14 days.
Currently, FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus is available for Tandem t:slim x2 insulin pump users with plans to expand compatibility to Omnipod users in the near future.
Outside the U.S., Abbott's FreeStyle Libre 3 sensor is already authorized to work with the mylife™ Loop solution from Ypsomed and CamDiab in Germany, with additional launches in the UK, Switzerland and the Netherlands planned for the first half of this year.
When will Freestyle Libre 2 Plus and Freestyle Libre 3 be available for automated insulin delivery?
The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus is currently available for Tandem t:slim x2 users. The FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus sensor connects wirelessly to the pump and automatically sends it glucose readings every minute. The t:slim x2 pump with Control IQ technology predicts glucose levels 30 minutes into the future and automatically adjusts insulin delivery every 5 minutes based on CGM readings.
At this time, the FreeStyle Libre 3 sensors are available in the U.S, but they have not received approval for automated insulin delivery yet.
Is Freestyle Libre 2 Plus and Freestyle Libre 3 compatible with any other devices?
Freestyle Libre 3 sensor is authorized to work with the mylife Loop automated insulin delivery system, including the mylife CamAPS FX app and mylife YpsoPump insulin pump. This integration is available for users who are located in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.
What is the difference between Freestyle Libre 2 Plus and 3?
The Freestyle Libre 2 Plus sensor is a 15-day CGM sensor that is authorized to work with the Tandem t:slim X2 insulin pump with Control IQ technology. The FreeStyle Libre 3 sensor is not currently compatible with any automated insulin delivery devices and has a wear time of 14 days.
