Are Freestyle Libre Sensors Waterproof?

Freestyle Libre sensors, including Libre 14-Day, Libre 2, and Libre 3, are all considered water-resistant, not waterproof. This means that while it can withstand water exposure, the manufacturer does not recommend submerging the sensor for extended periods of time.

Are Freestyle Libre Readers Waterproof?

Users who use the Freestyle Libre Reader to monitor their glucose levels and trends should keep in mind that the reader is not water-resistant or waterproof. It is advised to keep the reader away from water and should not be submerged in water.

How Long Can Freestyle Libre Be Exposed to Water?

Freestyle Libre is water-resistant which means it can withstand exposure to water. However, it is important to note that the manufacturer recommends the sensor to be worn no longer than 30 minutes in water that is deeper than 3 feet (1 meter). When the sensor is exposed to water for extended periods of time, water could enter the sensor and damage the device internally. This can impact the accuracy of glucose readings and even cause the sensor to stop working altogether.

What Factors Will Affect the Sensor Readings in Water?

Several factors can affect the accuracy of Freestyle Libre readings in water. When the sensor is submerged in water, the pressure and interference can impact the readings, resulting in readings that are too high, too low, or no readings at all. Water temperature can also impact the accuracy of the sensor readings, especially if the water is very cold or very warm. Physical activity, such as swimming and other water-based sports, can cause changes in the pressure on the sensor and impact the readings. While the sensor can withstand exposure to water, it may affect the accuracy of the readings. As a result, users may consider checking their glucose levels before and water activities with a glucose meter to confirm the accuracy of the sensor readings.

What if you stay in the water too long?

Extended exposure to water without any additional adhesive barriers or tapes can cause the Freestyle Libre sensor to fall off. The prolonged exposure to water can weaken the adhesive glucose that attaches the sensor to the skin, leading to a loosened adhesive that may result in the sensor falling off.

How do you Protect a Freestyle Libre Sensor in Water?

You can protect your Freestyle sensors by taking extra precautions during water-based activities. This includes using adhesive patches, medical tape, or liquid adhesives wipes to provide additional protection and give you a peace of mind that you won’t lose your sensor while in the water.

Can I make Freestyle Libre Waterproof?

Freestyle Libre sensor’s ability to become fully waterproof is solely within the manufacturer’s control. Although additional adhesive patches and tapes can be used to secure the sensor during water-based activities, the sensor will remain water-resistant.

What other options are there to protect the sensor when swimming?

There are several additional methods to safeguard your Freestyle Libre sensor when swimming or participating in other water-based activities. For instance, you can use a waterproof sleeve or a plastic arm band holder to keep the sensor secure, preventing it from dislodging from extended water exposure or underwater movements that could disrupt the sensor’s adhesive. However, some users have reported issues with waterproof armbands interfering with the sensor’s readings or experiencing discomfort from the plastic armbands while swimming.

Another option to keep your adhesive secure while swimming is to use Skin Grip patches. These lightweight patches are designed to provide a strong hold, without causing any discomfort or interference with the sensor’s readings. With Skin Grip patches you can enjoy swimming and your other favorite water-based activities without worrying about your sensor coming off.
