If you are living with diabetes, chances are you are likely a continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMs) user. CGMs provide real-time insights into blood sugar levels without the need for fingersticks. Along with the prevalence of smartphone devices, accessing blood sugar information has become more convenient than ever. If you’re a CGM user wondering how to get blood sugar readings on your iPhone, you’re in luck.

Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you integrate your CGM data to your iPhone:

1. Choose a compatible CGM System and Download the App

First things first, you want to ensure that the CGM system you are using is compatible with iPhone integration. Currently, brands like Dexcom, Freestyle Libre, and Medtronic offer apps specifically designed for iOS devices. Head over to the App Store on your iPhone and download the corresponding app for your CGM system. These apps are typically free to download and are designed to work seamlessly with your device. Here are the steps for each:

Dexcom G6 and G7 App for iPhone

  • Download the Dexcom G6 app or Dexcom G7 app from the App Store.
  • Follow the setup instructions to create an account and pair your Dexcom transmitter with your iPhone.

Freestyle LibreLink

  • Download the Freestyle LibreLink app for the 14-day Libre, Libre 2  or Libre 3 from the App store.
  • Set up your Freestyle LibreLink account and pair your Freestyle Libre sensor with your iPhone.

Medtronic MiniMed Mobile

  • Download the Medtronic MiniMed Mobile app from the App store.
  • Complete the app setup process and pair your Medtronic CGM system with your iPhone.

2. Enable Notifications

Once you’ve installed your respective CGM app, you want to ensure notifications are enabled within the app settings. Notifications can alert you to high or low blood sugar levels, trends, and impending hypoglycemia, providing timely insights for proactive diabetes management.

3. Share with Friends and Family

One of the remarkable features of CGM systems is the ability to share real-time data with loved ones. Many CGM apps offer a "Share" feature that allows you to invite friends and family to remotely view your blood sugar readings and receive alerts. This not only provides peace of mind for both you and your loved ones but also fosters a supportive network for managing diabetes together.

Dexcom Follow App for iPhone

For Dexcom users, you can invite followers via the Dexcom G6 or G7 app. Your followers can download the Dexcom Follow app on their own smartphones to view your glucose data and receive notifications.

FreeStyle LibreLinkUp App for iPhone

FreeStyle LibreLink users can also share their glucose data with friends and family using the LibreLinkUp app. Simply send invitations to your chosen contacts, who can then view your glucose readings remotely.

Medtronic CareLink Connect App for iPhone

Medtronic users with compatible MiniMed insulin pump or CGM connected to the CareLink softcare can share their glucose data with up to five followers using the CareLink Connect app. Invite trusted friends and family members to monitor your glucose levels and receive alerts when necessary.
